Caroline McIntosh

Caroline McIntosh is Chair of the Discipline of Podiatric Medicine and Head of the School of Health Sciences, NUI Galway, Ireland. Caroline has a specialist interest in the high risk limb. She has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers primarily in the field of tissue viability and diabetic foot disease, Caroline has acted as co-applicant and Principal Investigator (PI) for number of clinical interventional trials and has received research funding from several national and international sources.
Caroline is currently co-lead on a Health Research Board funded grant of €1.5 million entitled DFD PRIMO: Diabetic Foot Disease: from PRevention to treatment to IMproved patient Outcomes. The aim of this research is to create a coherent doctoral programme of patient-focused research in the thematic area of DFD that will bring tangible benefits and impacts to patient populations and health. Furthermore, to build capacity and expertise amongst health care professionals (HCPs) particularly in underrepresented health-related disciplines (e.g. podiatric medicine) thus increasing the number of highly skilled, future research leaders. Caroline is also PI for a study entitled ALERT- AtriaL Fibrillation ScrEening and early inteRvention in patienTs attending community podiatry. This research, funded by Bayer Ltd. Ireland, involves the opportunistic screening for AF in patients attending podiatry clinics and the development of a rapid referral pathway to Cardiology to improve patient outcomes and reduce the risk of future ischemic events.
