Dave Dunning

Podiatrist

I have had a long career, starting with the NHS. and moving into private practice . I undertook the podiatric surgery courses but found biomechanics more interesting and challenging.

I completed an MSc in Sport Injury and Therapy which took me into the academic arena resulting in 22 years of part time work at Staffordshire University Biomechanics lab where I was heavily involved in research having several publications to my name.

But I was still very much the Clinician.

I have in my time treated many elite sports men and women including rugby players (from the 2003 World cup winning team) ,elite athletes and many other sportsmen and women. In 2014 I was part of the medical team to the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

I have also been the podiatrist to Stoke City FC for 30 years.

In 2010 I was listed by the Sunday Times newspaper as one of the top doctors in the UK.

I was privileged to be one of the first group of Fellows of the College of Podiatry and I was also honoured to be one of the first podiatrist to become a fellow of a Royal Medical College. (RCPSGlasgow).

I have also been involved in global podiatric education and have lectured at various conferences worldwide including being Keynote speaker at the International conference in Miami in 2019.

I helped to set up the BSc in Malta developing the sports injuries and biomechanics modules.

I have been an invited speaker in Romania in helping to set up a podiatry Masters degree there.

I have been a council member at the now Royal College of Podiatrists and was chair from 2014 to 2016.

I have been a member of the board of International Federation of Podiatrists.

But, again, what I am most proud of is my clinical work.

Let’s talk about bunions

“When someone asks you “what causes bunions?” What do you say? Do you mumble something incoherent and hope they go away or quote Leonardo DaVinci and still hope they go away!”

We often hear it said “Bunions are the bane of my life” and it is not just the patients that say that!

This presentation will help in dealing with these questions, touching on the legal and professional aspects. It will also look at the possible causes of HAV. It will also look at the functional anatomy of the 1st Ray and some possible management options.

Gait – The Fundamentals

Anyone who deals with conditions of the foot should have a reasonable understanding of how the magic of human locomotion works.

This presentation will include a review of the Object, the Determinants and the Parameters of gait. It will look at the gait cycle, the phases of gait and some of the ‘perturbations’ to good gait and what this means to our clinical practice.
